Kaladesh brews – Mono Red Storm

In Kaladesh Wizards have printed five 1 CMC red spells. This excludes Bomat Courier. Of those five three are cantrips. Besides this they printed Cathartic Reunion, which admittedly is mostly Modern playable. All these cantrips together with Insolent Neonate, Expedite and Tormenting Voice form the core of the deck.

The Cantrips

4 Insolent Neonate – Some early damage and a target for our cantrips. In the late game provides a bit protection for Chandra.
4 Expedite – Being an instant is pretty good as often the target is our opponent’s creatures at the end step. It is also nice with Goblin Dark-Dwellers out of the sideboard.
4 Spark of Creativity – The versatility this spell provides makes it pretty important for the deck.
4 Renegade Tactics – This is rarely more than 1 mana draw a card.
4 Tormenting Voice – A discard outlet and a simple cantrip.

The Pay Off

4 Thermo-Alchemist – Probably the best card in the deck. If unanswered, it may end the game in a couple of turns.
3 Bedlam Reveler – Should frequently cost 2 mana. I considered playing 2 and 4, but sometimes I don’t find it and we know it is bad to have 2 in hand.
2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance – Chandra provides everything we need in the deck. I expect we will have hard time keeping her around, so it is often best to use her minus ability when she enters. We would rarely need the mana ability especially in game 1.

A Pinch Of Burn

4 Fiery Temper – We have 13 discard outlets. We just hope we don’t reveal this to Spark of Creativity or Chandra.
4 Collective Defiance – The best tool for dealing with a creature.
1 Fateful Showdown – Because most of our spells cantrip, we end up with reasonable hand size even at the later stages of the game.

The Lands

4 Drownyard Temple – It is pretty important to have multiple red sources, but having value off of our discard outlets is also important
18 Mountain – I am still experimenting with the mana base. 20 seem few, but once the deck gets going I end up flooding a bit. It is important to use properly the discard outlets (including Collective Defiance)

The Sideboard

4 Lathnu Hellion – I wonder how good he will be. We have 7 must answer creatures in the mainboard, so probably opponents will keep their removal
4 Weaver of Lightning – Great at killing weenies
2 Goblin Dark-Dwellers – A value creature for grindy games. Wokrs well with Expedite.
3 Devour in Flames – Our best answer to opponent’s planeswalkers. It picks up a land in the late game to possibly discard for value.
2 Otherworldly Outburst – Good against opponent’s removal, but also has cute synergy with Insolent Neonate and Lathnu Hellion
